Call the Florida AHEC Tobacco referral line at 1-87-QUIT-NOW-6. This will transfer you to an AHEC Center near you. Someone from that center will talk to you about Quit Smoking Now groups starting in your town.

AHEC stands for Area Health Education Center.  The Florida AHEC Network is an extensive system for health professional education and support founded upon 10 regional area health education centers.  Each center is supported by an AHEC program at one of the state’s medical schools.

Quit Smoking Now covers many topics. You will learn why you use tobacco, the addiction process, the health benefits of quitting, triggers, medications to help you quit, ways to change your behavior to keep you from going back to using tobacco, and more.

Each Quit Smoking Now group is led by a facilitator. It is the facilitator’s role to provide accurate information about quitting and keep the group ‘on track.’ He or she guides conversation so everyone has the chance to talk about their quit process. The facilitator motivates the group and encourages interaction so each participant can draw on the success and support of each other.

It is suggested that you attend each and every session because we cover valuable information that you will need to get you to your quit day. If you will miss more than one session, we suggest you wait until the next class begins.

The Quit Smoking Now curriculum is an inclusive tobacco cessation program designed to help you quit all types of tobacco. During Session #1 we talk about chewing tobacco, snuff, snus and gutkas. Some people come to Quit Smoking Now to quit more than one type of tobacco (for example, cigarettes and chew).

As a group, the participants will choose the Quit Day, which usually falls during Session 3 or 4.

All classes are free. You will be provided with all the necessary materials to participate in the class.

If your friend is ready to quit, it may be helpful for you both to attend. You may find it helpful to quit with a friend because you can carpool to Quit Smoking Now and talk to each other if you have a craving.  You can also celebrate your success together. If you think your friend will not support you (or will make excuses for you to keep using tobacco), bring a different friend. Your friend does not have to be a tobacco user to come with you.

No one can make you stop using tobacco unless you want to.  You need to promise yourself, right now, that you will keep an open mind and positive attitude about this quit attempt. Quit Smoking Now is different; we support each other and focus on the positive. The Workbook was created by other people who successfully quit tobacco. Plus, studies prove that quitting in a group with the help of a professional doubles your chance of quitting for good.

You are welcome to continue to come to classes until you reach a quit day and quit for good. The Quit Smoking Now facilitator can also tell you about other services available to help you quit.

Quitting will save you money.  If you currently smoke one pack a day, you could save about $800-$1,000 in the first 3 months of quitting. Plus, the Quit Smoking Now program is free to attend. There are medications to help you quit tobacco; we will tell you about your options, price, and how to get them.
When you quit tobacco, you also get sick less often, which means less days you miss work. You may also get a discount on your life insurance or health insurance.

Quit Smoking Now was written by ex-smokers for people who want to be ex-smokers.  The program is based on what they went through to quit for good. It also includes information from the Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Best Practices, which set the standards for the best way to quit tobacco for good. And of course, you will be in a group of people of are trying to quit, just like you.

During Session #1 the group will talk about nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).  Some AHECs supply the participants with free NRT.  You can also call the Florida Quitline (1-877-U-CAN-NOW) and get free counseling sessions and NRT (based on availability). In Quit Smoking Now, we also tell you about medications that do not have nicotine (non-nicotine pharmacotherapy) that can double your chances of quitting for good.

Some people find it easier to participate in the group activities without their spouse there. This allows them to talk honestly about household and family barriers and triggers. Other people find it easier to have their spouse with them so they can support each other. Sometimes both people in the relationship are there to quit. Other times one person is quitting and one person is there to emotionally support them.

Each quit attempt is wonderful for your health and each one is also different from another.  Your success in each quit attempt depends upon your emotional state, the impact of recent trauma or setbacks in life, and the amount of stress in your day-to-day routine.  Remember, everyone starts using tobacco for different reasons and continues to do so over the years for different reasons. Each will quit in the way that best fits him or her. Plus, we teach you about medications that double your chances of quitting for good.

It is suggested that you attend each and every session because we cover valuable information that you will need to get you to your quit day.  If you will miss more than one session, we suggest you wait until the next class begins.

If you come to the first class and realize the class is not for you, feel free to return the materials and not come back. We encourage you to try another way of quitting, like calling the Florida Quitline (1-877-U-CAN-NOW) to get help quitting over the phone or talking to your doctor.

Continue to check our AHEC map and click on the AHEC Center closest to you.  These are updated calendars that can assist you in finding a class. Feel free to contact the AHEC center if you have questions about upcoming classes.

Some people choose not to go to Quit Smoking Now. Some people do not like the group setting. Others cannot get off work or get a ride to attend the group. The Florida Quitline (1-877-U-CAN-NOW) offers free counseling sessions over the phone and can mail you free nicotine replacement therapy (based on availability).
